Our first stop in Montenegro is tiny charming place Perast. This old town on the Bay of Kotor is a few kilometres away from Kotor city and close to the small islets of St. George and Our Lady of the Rocks. From Perast we will take a boat ride to small island Our Lady of the Rocks. According to legend, the islet was made over the centuries by local seamen who kept an ancient oath after finding the icon of Madonna and Child on the rock in the sea. Upon returning from each successful voyage, they laid a rock in the Bay. Over time, the islet gradually emerged from the sea. The custom of throwing rocks into the sea is alive even nowadays. Every year on the sunset of July 22, an event called fašinada in the local dialect, when local residents take their boats and throw rocks into the sea, widening the surface of the island, takes place.
Next stop is UNESCO protected City of Kotor. This amazing city is located on the banks of Kotor Bay. The old town of Kotor is the best preserved urban center from the Middle Ages surrounded by 5 kilometer walls. Kotor’s medieval monuments have put Kotor on the UNESCO list of the Cultural Heritage Sites. After Kotor sightseeing you will have time for lunch in one of Kotor restaurants.
